Roger Goodell rejects NFLPA request to recuse himself from Tom Brady appeal

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell rejects the request from the NFL Players Association to recuse himself from the appeal of New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady.

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell has refused the request of the NFL Players Association to recuse himself from the role as arbitrator for Tom Brady's appeal.

Goodell appointed himself to the position for the New England Patriots quarterback's appeal against his four-game ban, despite his role in the punishment of the 37-year-old.

The NFLPA demanded him to recuse himself from the appeal to ensure the integrity of the case. However, the 56-year-old is adamant that he will be impartial to protect the image of the league.

He said in a statement: "My mind is open because protecting the integrity of the game is the commissioner's most important responsibility. I decline to rewrite our collective bargaining agreement to abrogate my authority and 'discretion' to hear 'any appeal' in a conduct detrimental proceeding.

"I have publicly expressed my appreciation to [investigator] Mr Wells and his colleagues for their thorough and independent work.

"But that does not mean that I am wedded to their conclusions or to their assessment of the facts. Nor does it mean that, after considering the evidence and argument presented during the appeal, I may not reach a different conclusion about Mr. Brady's conduct or the discipline imposed."

The appeal will reportedly be heard on June 23.
