Tokyo to host 2020 Olympics

Tokyo will become the first Asian city to host the Olympic Games twice after winning the decisive International Olympic Committee vote in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Tokyo will become the first Asian city to host the Olympics twice after beating off competition from Istanbul and Madrid for the right to the 2020 Games.

An electronic ballot was taken by International Olympic Committee (IOC) members in Buenos Aires, Argentina, this evening.

After the first round of voting, it was the Japanese city, who last hosted the Games in 1964, emerged triumphant, while the Spanish and Turkish capitals finished tied.

However, the delegates of Istanbul were celebrating when the crucial second vote came back 49-45 in their favour, meaning that it is the third time in a row that Madrid have failed with an Olympic bid.

Outgoing IOC president Jacques Rogge, who will step down from his position on Tuesday after 12 years in the job, had the honour of announcing for the final time that the Games of the 32nd Olympiad will be held in Tokyo.

When the final voting was revealed, Tokyo won by a landslide 60-36 margin.

Istanbul have now failed with five bids, although this represents their closest finish.
