Team GB disqualified from men's 4x400m relay

Great Britain are disqualified from the men's 4x400m relay final for "taking the baton outside of an exchange zone" in their heat.

Great Britain have missed out on a place in the men's 4x400m relay final after they were disqualified for an infringement in their heat.

The quartet of Nigel Levine, Delano Williams, Matthew Hudson-Smith and Martyn Rooney combined to seemingly put the team through to the final as the third-fastest qualifiers before they were later removed for "taking the baton outside of an exchange zone".

The offence is yet to be confirmed but it appears that Rooney could have been penalised for having one foot outside of the designated area on the last changeover. However, the team's most experienced athlete insisted that none of the side could have fallen foul of the rules.

He told BBC Radio 5 live: "In the first changeover you have to be between two red lines which are about 20 metres apart. You have to stay within those red lines.

"From then on there is a solid red line across the track which is about 10 metres before the finish line and 10 metres afterwards, and you have to exchange within the zones.

"I haven't seen it, but I can't see how any of us went outside those zones."

Brazil have now been given a place in the final after an appeal from Great Britain was turned down.
