Stephen Kiprotich is hoping that he has made the people of Uganda "very happy" by winning gold in the men's marathon.

Stephen Kiprotich believes that his performance in the men's marathon at the London Olympics earlier today will have made the people of his homeland Uganda "very happy".

The 23-year-old broke clear of his two Kenyan arrivals in the closing stages to claim the gold medal in the English capital in a time of 2:08.01.

"It means a lot. Since 1972 we have never won a gold medal, so they are very happy," he told BBC Sport.

Kiprotich recently moved away from Uganda to Kenya for training purposes.
