Paul Sunderland narrowly misses out on canoeing medal at Youth Olympic Games

Paul Sunderland narrowly misses out on a medal in the canoeing event at the Youth Olympic Games, but takes great pride from his effort.

Great Britain canoeist Paul Sunderland has reflected on his men's K1 slalom adventure at the 2014 Youth Olympic Games with great pride, despite narrowly missing out on a medal.

The 17-year-old progressed through to today's semi-finals in Nanjing as the fourth-fastest competitor, but he was edged out by Slovenia's Anze Urankar for a place in the gold-medal final despite registering his personal best time of the Games.

Sunderland also missed out on bronze after failing to beat Song Huang of China, who finished third.

"It was really tough and really hard work but literally threw everything I had into the bronze medal race," Sunderland told reporters.

"It was the fastest time I have managed to do at the Youth Olympic so you can't be disappointed by that really can you. I knew it was always going to be tough but I just tried my hardest and that is all I could do.

"Straight after the race I was a little bit disappointed because you look at the times and it was so close, but a top four finish is fine and I am happy with that."

Urankar went on to take gold in the event.
