Former EastEnders star Nigel Harman joins the cast of Casualty playing a "loveable rogue" called Max.

Former EastEnders star Nigel Harman has joined the cast of Casualty in a new regular role.

The 49-year-old actor is best known for playing Dennis Rickman - son of the legendary Dirty Den (Leslie Grantham) - on the BBC soap between 2003 and 2005.

According to the Daily Star, he has now started filming a role as new staff member Max, described as "a loveable rogue", on Casualty.

"Nigel has signed a one-year contract with the show. It's really exciting," a source told the newspaper. "Producers are thrilled to have such a big name joining the cast.

"Max is really going to ruffle feathers. He is a loveable rogue who isn't afraid to say what he thinks.

"The writers have got some really big storylines planned for this character. He's going to be at the centre of the action."

Harman's first scenes are expected to air in the New Year.
