Claire Sweeney confirms that she has penned a new one-year deal to remain on Coronation Street as Cassie Plummer.

Claire Sweeney has confirmed that she has signed a new deal to remain on Coronation Street for at least another year.

The actress - a former Brookside legend - joined the soap last summer playing Cassie Plummer, the estranged daughter of Evelyn (Maureen Lipman) and biological mother of Tyrone (Alan Halsall).

Speaking to Cheshire Life, Sweeney revealed that she will be on the cobbles until at least summer 2025 as Cassie sets down firm roots in Weatherfield.

"I've just signed my contract for another year in Corrie and I'm really happy to fully invest all my time and energy into Cassie and see what develops," she said.

"I couldn't be happier about the acting scenes I have done recently in Coronation Street with Dame Maureen Lipman in the Rovers, and with Alan Halsall and Jennie McAlpine in the Dobbs household.

"When I first came in to Corrie, I did a 14-page scene with Maureen while my character was in hospital. Playing opposite such a phenomenal actor was a dream come true.

"The writing and direction for that episode was amazing. That is definitely one of my highlights."

Coronation Street continues Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 8pm on ITV1 and ITVX.
