Doctor Who showrunner Russell T Davies insists that David Tennant's Doctor is "parked" for now.

Doctor Who showrunner Russell T Davies has insisted that he has "no plans" for new episodes of the show featuring David Tennant's version of The Doctor.

The actor returned to the role as a new incarnation of the Time Lord - the Fourteenth Doctor - for the three 60th anniversary specials, the last of which saw him undergo a "bigeneration".

The bigeneration resulted in two versions of The Doctor - Tennant's Fourteenth and Ncuti Gatwa's Fifteenth - both existing at the same time, with the former entering a form of retirement and living on Earth with companions Donna (Catherine Tate) and Mel (Bonnie Langford).

The Fifteenth, alongside new companion Ruby Sunday (Millie Gibson), will be the subject of Doctor Who moving forward - but with the Fourteenth still in play, speculation has naturally abounded that he could feature in a new spinoff show.

"No plans, genuinely, yet, because it's a busy TARDIS - these two are gonna just sail across the universe and capture your heart, so it's time to look at these two," Davies said at a press screening of this year's Christmas special featuring Gatwa and Gibson.

He continued: "Bigeneration, we discover, is an ancient myth of the Time Lords where, instead of a new body taking over from the old body, the new body separates from the old body and both are left alive.

"David is parked. For once, we've got a happy Doctor who is no longer saving the universe, but is parked with Donna for a happy life, while the Doctor (Gatwa) – which is always the next Doctor, and that's always true of Doctor Who, The Doctor is the next Doctor – is out amongst the stars."

Doctor Who returns Christmas Day at 5.55pm on BBC One in the UK and Ireland and via Disney+ worldwide.
