The highly-anticipated blockbuster Avatar: The Way of Water draws in £357m at the box office in its opening weekend.

Avatar: The Way of Water got off to a strong start in its opening weekend, pulling in $435m (£357m) worldwide.

The highly-anticipated sequel, which reportedly cost $1 billion to make, delivered box office receipts of $134m (£110m) in the US alone - largely driven by viewers watching the film in 3D and IMAX cinemas.

China was the movie's second biggest market with $57.1m (£46.9m), while the UK contributed £11.5m, Germany managed £16.3m and South Korea had £20.3m.

A third movie in the franchise has been filmed for release at Christmas 2024, while two further films are in development but have yet to get the green light.

Reports have suggested that The Way of Water will need to generate $2 billion (£1.64 billion) to break even - a figure that would put the film into the top five highest-grossing movies of all time.
