Dixie Chicks founder Laura Lynch dies in car crash, aged 65
Laura Lynch, one of the founding members of Dixie Chicks, dies in a car crash at the age of 65.

Laura Lynch, one of the founders of country music group Dixie Chicks, has died in a car crash.

The 65-year-old was driving on a highway in Texas on Friday morning when her car was hit by another car which was allegedly trying to overtake a third vehicle on her side of the road.

Formed in 1989, Dixie Chicks went on to achieve huge global success, with lead vocalist Lynch departing in 1995 and the band are now known as The Chicks.

In a statement, the group said: "We are shocked and saddened to learn of the passing of Laura Lynch, a founding member of The Chicks. We hold a special place in our hearts for the time we spent playing music, laughing and traveling together.

"Laura was a bright light... her infectious energy and humor gave a spark to the early days of our band. Laura had a gift for design, a love of all things Texas and was instrumental in the early success of the band.

"Her undeniable talents helped propel us beyond busking on street corners to stages all across Texas and the mid-West. Our thoughts are with her family and loved ones at this sad time."

Lynch is survived by her husband and their daughter.
