BBC iPlayer launches Netflix Party-style functionality

The BBC introduces BBC Together, an experimental feature that allows people from different households to watch content at exactly the same time.

The BBC has introduced a new experimental feature that will allow different households to watch programmes at exactly the same time.

BBC Together lets groups of people - friends, classmates, family - simulcast content from across the BBC, including iPlayer, Sounds, Bitesize, News and Sport.

To get started, a designated host needs to visit the BBC Together website, paste in the URL of the content they wish to stream then send a special link on to the other members of their group.

"There may be physical distance between us, but that doesn't mean we can't enjoy great programmes with our friends, family, colleagues and classmates," said Libby Miller, senior producer at BBC Research & Development.

"We wanted to see if technology could bring people together to watch and listen to BBC shows remotely as a shared experience, which we've done with BBC Together.

"It's important to say that it's just a test at this stage - and we'll be monitoring how well it works and thinking about how we could change it in the future, but we're looking forward to seeing and hearing about the creative ways that people use it and getting their feedback on Taster."

The technology is similar to the third-party Netflix Party add-on for Chrome, which allows groups of friends to stream Netflix content in tandem.
