Mary & George star Nicholas Galitzine admits his fears at being regarded solely as a heartthrob.

Nicholas Galitzine has admitted that he fears that being regarded as a heartthrob may impede his ability to be "taken seriously" as an actor.

The 29-year-old has rose to fame over the last few years with roles in the likes of Red, White & Royal Blue, Handsome Devil and Mary & George, earning him a thirsty fanbase in the process.

Speaking to GQ Magazine, he said: "I think the most important thing to me is that I'm taken seriously as a performer.

"I'm not gonna ask you to cry me a river here, but it's been difficult being part of a conversation that feels very much like I am a cut of beef at a meat market.

"I think [appearance] being my defining feature is something I'm constantly terrified of."

The actor also has a large LGBT fanbase, having played gay or bisexual characters in many of his projects, and went on to reveal that he sometimes feels "guilt" taking on such roles.

"I identify as a straight man, but I have been a part of some incredible queer stories," he explained. "I felt a sense of uncertainty sometimes about whether I'm taking up someone's space, and perhaps guilt.

"At the same time, I see those characters as not solely their sexuality."

Galitzine can currently be seen opposite Anne Hathaway in the age-gap romance The Idea of You, which is now streaming on Prime Video.
