Racing de Santander banned from next year's Copa del Rey

Racing de Santander will not take part in next year's Copa del Rey competition after boycotting yesterday evening's quarter-final game against Real Socieded.

Racing de Santander have been banned from taking part in next year's Copa del Rey competition, following their players' refusal to face Real Sociedad yesterday evening.

After taking the field on Thursday for the second leg of their quarter-final fixture, the Racing squad gathered around the centre circle and stood still, while the opposition passed the ball around their half of the pitch. The referee eventually abandoned the game.

As a result, the Spanish footballing authorities have decided to ban Racing from the 2014-15 Copa del Rey competition, and the indebted club also received a fine of €3,006 (£2,462).

Racing boycotted the match because of club president Angel Lavin's refusal to resign after the players had allegedly gone four months without being paid.

Real Sociedad have gone through to the semi-finals after winning the first leg 3-1, and will face Barcelona.
