Hristo Stoichkov calls for Barcelona to be awarded La Liga title

Barcelona legend Hristo Stoichkov claims that the 2019-20 season should be ended with current league standings counting, meaning that his former club would win the title.

Barcelona legend Hristo Stoichkov has claimed that the "fairest" solution to the 2019-20 La Liga season would be to award his former club the title.

Almost all sporting action around the globe has been halted due to the coronavirus pandemic, with Spain the second-most affected country in the world, having seen almost 14,000 people die from the COVID-19 disease.

The future of the current campaign remains up in the air due to lingering uncertainty about when action will be able to resume, and Stoichkov believes that the La Liga standings should stay as they were before the shutdown, with two clubs promoted from the Segunda Division.

"We don't need fear, but we do need discipline. If we look at how the situation is, with the matches that have been played, the fairest thing would be to finish La Liga as it is," Stoichkov told Cadena COPE.

"Lower down, many could still avoid relegation, there are many games left. So the league could stay as it is, with no team going down and the first two in Segunda going up to make a league of 22. Because they (Cadiz and Real Zaragoza) have worked hard and won a lot of games."

Barcelona went into the shutdown sitting just two points above bitter rivals Real Madrid at the top of the table.
