The America carded a three-under-par round of 69 to leave himself four-under overall with Fijian Vijay Singh and Sweden's overnight leader Carl Pettersson.

England's Ian Poulter jumped up the leaderboard to end the day a shot further back, while Rory McIlroy hit a three-over 75 to put him on two-under with Welshman Jamie Donaldson.

British Open runner-up Adam Scott is one back with three others, and Graeme McDowell joins Phil Mickelson, Peter Hanson and Tim Clark on even-par.

Elsewhere, defending champion Keegan Bradley hit a disappointing 77 to put him on one-over with eight others, including 1991 winner John Daly.

World number one Luke Donald followed up his round of 74 with a 76 to make his score at the halfway stage six-over-par.
