England women continue winning start against Wales

England's women's hockey team make it two wins from two at the Commonwealth Games with a 5-1 victory over neighbours Wales.

Team England's women's hockey team have made it two wins from two at the Commonwealth Games courtesy of a 5-1 victory over Wales on the Gold Coast this evening.

Wales looked as though they would push an England side containing many of the gold-medal winners from the Team GB squad at the Rio Olympics all the way, but they were blown away in the final quarter to make the scoreline look more one-sided.

Anything other than an England victory would have been harsh, though, after they registered 18 shots on goal compared to just four from Wales.

The opening goal did not arrive until midway through the second quarter when England finally broke the deadlock through Giselle Ansley, and Susannah Townsend added a second two minutes later to give her side control of the match at half time.

Eloise Laity's strike less than four minutes after the restart reduced the deficit to one heading into the final quarter, though, leaving Wales with hope of pulling off an unexpected victory.

However, goals from Hannah Martin, Sophie Bray and Grace Balsdon saw England storm clear in the final 15 minutes, taking them to the top of Pool A as the only team with an unblemished record.

England's next match sees them face India on Sunday, whereas Wales take on South Africa on Monday.
