Latvian stabbed to death in row over men's skeleton final

A Latvian man living in Ireland is stabbed to death after a row broke out while a group watched the men's skeleton final at the Winter Olympics in Sochi.

A Latvian man living in Ireland has been stabbed to death by two men over a dispute surrounding the Winter Olympics.

Alexander Karpov, 26, was drinking while watching the men's skeleton final on television with two other men on Spa Street, Portarlington, County Laois, on Saturday.

When the Russian Federation's Alexander Tretiakov took gold and Latvia's Martins Dukurs claimed the silver medal, a row broke out between the group, according to the Irish Mirror.

One of the men then ran to the kitchen to pick up a knife and began to threaten Mr Karpov before stabbing him.

Mr Karpov was pronounced dead at the scene by the emergency services.

The Irish police have arrested two men, one in his 30s and the other in his 40s.
