Sam Townsend and Bill Lucas fail to win a medal for Great Britain in the men's double sculls final after finishing fifth as New Zealand clinched gold.

Great Britain's Sam Townsend and Bill Lucas have failed to secure a medal in the final of the men's double sculls at Eton Dorney, while New Zealand retain their Olympic glory by clinching gold.

The British duo took a strong push out of the gate and snatched the lead after the first 100m but Slovenia and Lithuania were hot on their heels.

Lucas and Townsend dipped slightly towards the halfway point, with Lithuania launching up the water to take a clear spot in front.

The Brits settled into an easy rhythm, but the final stretch was tough for the duo as Italy and reigning champions New Zealand launched an attack.

Lucas and Townsend began to struggle in the final 250m and looked out of a medal spot with Italy and New Zealand fighting it out for gold and silver.

Despite a tough battle, New Zealand just had enough to pip Italy to gold, while Slovenia nabbed bronze with Great Britain finishing fifth behind Argentina.
