Philip Lucas lauds "incredible" support

Barbados captain Philip Lucas praises the support his side have received on the opening day of the rugby sevens despite being beaten by Canada, Scotland and New Zealand.

Barbados captain Philip Lucas has admitted that he "can't believe" the support that his side have received on the opening day of the rugby sevens today.

Barbados were soundly beaten in all three of their Group A encounters, culminating in a 59-0 defeat to reigning Commonwealth Games, World Series and World Cup champions New Zealand this evening.

The crowd inside Ibrox were fully behind the underdogs throughout the day, and Lucas revealed that he had enjoyed the experience despite the results on the pitch.

"It was absolutely incredible, I can't believe the support we've been given here in Glasgow. It's fantastic, it really gave us a lift," he told Sports Mole.

"Playing against the best side in the world is obviously a hard test and the scoreline is really tough on us. But for a little country like us to play against the world's best is awesome. [The crowd was] fantastic.

'We were obviously very tired after the first two games, but the support we were getting, them chanting 'Barbados' was a massive boost for us."

Barbados will now face the Cook Islands in the bowl quarter-final tomorrow morning.
