Novak Djokovic bows out in the second round of the Monte Carlo Masters after a 3-6 7-6 [7-5] 1-6 defeat to Spain's Alejandro Davidovich Fokina.

World number one Novak Djokovic saw his run at the Monte Carlo Masters come to an end in the second round against Spain's Alejandro Davidovich Fokina.

The 20-time Grand Slam winner admitted that he would not be at his best in the tournament and bowed out 3-6 7-6 [7-5] 1-6 to Fokina, who prevailed after his counterpart missed a vital drop shot.

Fokina immediately found himself on the front foot after electing to receive and broke twice to propel himself into a 4-1 lead - winning the fifth game with a stunning cross-court forehand winner.

Djokovic briefly pulled himself back into the first set before Fokina won back-to-back games to clinch it, and the Spaniard raced into a 3-0 lead in the second set before struggling with a wrist issue.

Djokovic took advantage to pull it back to 6-6 and force a tie-break which he prevailed in, but Fokina came out all guns blazing in the third set and broke Djokovic another three times to advance to round three.

The Spaniard will now meet wildcard David Goffin or Great Britain's Dan Evans - who overcame Benjamin Bonzi earlier on Tuesday - in the third round of the Masters 1000 event.
