Yun Chol Om wins surprise gold medal

Yun Chol Om lifts an Olympic record in the clean and jerk in the 56kg mens weightlifting to claim a gold medal for North Korea.

North Korea's Yun Chol Om has produced an astonishing performance to shock the sport and win gold in the 56kg weightlifting category in London.

Om, who lifted earlier in the day within the category B athletes for competitors outside the top 10 in the world, recorded an Olympic record and joint world record 168 kg in the clean and jerk to take the title with a total weight of 293kg.

Double-world champion Jingbiao Wu looked out of form during the evening session and a failed lift of 161kg in the clean and jerk effectively awarded the gold medal to his North Korean opponent.

Valentin Hristov was locked in a battle for bronze medal but a clean and jerk of 159kg meant the 18-year-old from Azerbaijan finished third in the competition.
