Dame Sarah Storey creates British Paralympics history with 12th gold

Dame Sarah Storey creates British Paralympics history by winning her seventh cycling gold medal at the Paralympic Games and a 12th gold overall.

Dame Sarah Storey has created British Paralympics history by winning her 12th gold medal of the Games at Rio 2016.

A dominant victory for the 38-year-old makes her the most successful female Team GB Paralympian ever, overtaking Tanni Grey-Thompson at her seventh Games - another record.

Storey has taken five golds in swimming and now seven in cycling, too, in a record that spans back 24 years to her first victory in the 100m backstroke S10 at Barcelona 1992.

The latest triumph in the long-running list of medal successes came in some style, as Storey - born without a left hand - caught fellow Brit Crystal Lane after just 1,375m in the women's C5 3000m individual pursuit final.

Storey, only picked for the Games 10 days ago, has three more chances to build on her tally of medals in Rio de Janeiro over the coming days.

Britain now have two golds, and three medals overall, with Megan Giglia prevailing in the women's C1-2-3 300m individual pursuit shortly before Storey wrote her name in British sporting history.
