Gemma Gibbons contemplating retirement after 2016 Rio Olympics

Judo star Gemma Gibbons announces that she may retire after the 2016 Rio Olympic Games.

One of Britain's most popular judokas, Gemma Gibbons, has announced that she might retire after the 2016 Rio Olympic Games.

Gibbons, who will be competing in the women's -78kg category at the European Games in Baku on Saturday, has cited the desire for a career as the reason why she may leave the sport.

"I will be 29 at the next Olympics and I'll probably be finished after Rio," she told reporters in Baku. "I want to have a family, I want to have a career and that's going to be hard at the age of 30. I could do one more but my body has given me a hard time over the last couple of years and I'm not sure it would hold up.

"I could become a teacher, and I would also be interested in working with elite athletes. If I could teach judo at school that would be great, and pretty easy!"

She added: "I have never won a European medal and this competition is a big, big deal, not far off the world championships. I have been training in Mongolia for this, and I'm going back there afterwards. I'm ready."

Gibbons, who is currently still studying in Edinburgh, has a degree in sports science, as well as a teaching qualification.
