Mia Hermansson: 'I feel bad for Great Britain's Gemma Howell'

Sweden's Mia Hermansson offers sympathy to Great Britain's Gemma Howell following her disappointing penalty exit at the European Games.

Mia Hermansson has admitted that she was left feeling sorry for Gemma Howell after beating her opponent at the last-16 stage of the women's -63kg judo event.

The Swedish judoka turned the match around with a waza-aria 11 seconds from time earlier today to progress through to the quarter-finals.

Hermansson failed to overcome Israel's Yarden Gerbi at that stage, though, before crashing to defeat against Juul Franssen of the Netherlands in the repechage.

Speaking after her Baku exit, the 22-year-old told reporters: "I feel a bit bad for [Howell] because it's the third time we meet this year and last time, not long ago at all, I was down on penalties too.

"Just in the end she made a bad attack and I countered her, got a waza-ari and kept my lead in the end. I wonder how she feels now, but that's not my problem."

Howell became the third Team GB competitor to crash out of this morning's judo events, following in the footsteps of Owen Livesey and Alice Schlesinger.
