Katherine Grainger 'won't put family through another Olympics'

Great Britain rower and Rio Olympics medallist Katherine Grainger promises her mother and father that she will not 'put them through' competing at Tokyo 2020.

Great Britain rower Katherine Grainger has hinted at retirement after promising her mother and father that she will not 'put them through' another Olympic tournament.

The 40-year-old, a gold medallist at London 2012, came out of retirement to compete at the Rio Games and won silver in the final of the women's double sculls alongside Victoria Thornley.

Grainger told reporters after Thursday's final: "I don't think we could have done any more, we put every element into it and really gave it everything we had. We had to find something really big at the end there to hold onto the medal and I'm so pleased we did.

"There have of course been many, many dark days when I couldn't see this happening so to be standing in the Rio sunshine with a medal around my neck is amazing. But regarding Tokyo 2020 – mum and dad, I promise I won't put you through it again."

Grainger has now won silver medals in Sydney, Athens, Beijing and Rio, in addition to her gold in London four years ago, making her the most decorated British female Olympian of all time.
