Thomas Hamer breaks world record on way to Commonwealth gold

Team England swimmer Thomas Hamer breaks his own world record to win gold in the men's S14 200m freestyle final at the Commonwealth Games.

Team England swimmer Thomas Hamer smashed his own world record to claim gold in the men's S14 200m freestyle final at the Commonwealth Games this evening.

The 19-year-old led all the way at the Optus Aquatics Centre on the Gold Coast despite being only the fourth-fastest in qualifying, finishing in a time of 1:55.88 to beat his previous world record by three tenths of a second.

Hamer was followed in by three Australians, with Liam Schluter and Daniel Fox claiming silver and bronze respectively, while Mitchell Kilduff narrowly missed out on a place on the podium.

Schluter's own time was just 0.05 seconds off the previous world record prior to tonight, but Hamer set a new standard to continue a golden night in the pool for Team England - going one better than the silver medal he won in Glasgow four years ago.

Welsh duo Jack Thomas and Alex Rosser finished in fifth and sixth respectively, meanwhile, with the latter failing to recover from a poor start.
