French Open roundup: Nadal, Thiem and Halep ease into next round

The story of the sixth day of action at the French Open.

Rafael Nadal, Dominic Thiem and Simona Halep continued to breeze through their matches at Roland Garros.

Halep gained emphatic revenge against the player who ended her title defence last summer, allowing Amanda Anisimova just one game, while Nadal defeated Stefano Travaglia and Thiem saw off Casper Ruud.

It was a good day for the last two French singles hopes, with wild card Hugo Gaston stunning Stan Wawrinka and Caroline Garcia upsetting Elise Mertens.

Wide of the mark

No Hawk-Eye needed for this double fault by Garcia.

Barty party

Ashleigh Barty chose not to defend her French Open title, instead staying at home in Australia. She does not appear to be missing Roland Garros too much, spending her Friday night, beer in hand, at the AFL Finals cheering on Richmond.

Fallen seeds

Women: Elise Mertens (16), Maria Sakkari (20), Amanda Anisimova (25), Ekaterina Alexandrova (27)
Men: Stan Wawrinka (16), Taylor Fritz (27), Casper Ruud (28)

Who's next?

Novak Djokovic will look to match Nadal by easing through to the fourth round when he takes on lucky loser Daniel Elahi Galan.

Stefanos Tsitsipas faces former British player Aljaz Bedene, who is back representing his native Slovenia, while Petra Kvitova meets exciting young Canadian Leylah Fernandez.

Former champion Garbine Muguruza is up against American Danielle Collins, and Australian Open champion Sofia Kenin plays Romania's Irina Bara.
