Long-serving manager Diego Simeone is reportedly on the brink of signing a new contract with Atletico Madrid.

Atletico Madrid are reportedly on the brink of finalising a new contract for manager Diego Simeone.

The 53-year-old is currently one of the longest-serving bosses in world football having been at the helm at Atletico since 2011.

During that time, Simeone has taken charge of 638 matches in all competitions, recording 377 victories and suffering just 114 defeats.

Simeone has regularly delivered Champions League football at Wanda Metropolitano, with his most notable achievements being two La Liga titles and two Europa League trophies.

In 11 seasons under Simeone's guidance, Atletico have remarkably never finished lower than third, yet that sustained period has regularly led to suggestions that he may take on a new challenge in the future.

As it stands, Simeone's contract is due to expire at the end of the current campaign, speculation naturally rife that admirers may make an approach for his services.

However, according to Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano, the former midfielder has made the decision to commit his immediate future to Colchoneros.

Romano says that a verbal agreement has already been reached between the relevant parties and an official announcement is expected in due course.

Should the development be confirmed, it would represent somewhat of a coup for Atletico, even though they have made a strong start to the new campaign.

Nineteen points have been collected from their opening eight games in La Liga, sitting five points adrift of leaders Real Madrid with a game in hand having already defeated their neighbours this season.

Atletico have also posted a 1-1 draw with Lazio and recorded a 3-2 triumph over Feyenoord in the Champions League ahead of two fixtures with Celtic.

That is despite Atletico being unable to enjoy the most productive of summer transfer windows, Simeone reliant on free transfers and low-cost deals.

As many as eight players at Atletico are due to be out of contract in 2024, the club possibly hoping that certainty over Simeone's future may lead to renewals in due course.
