Preview: Feyenoord vs. Partizan - prediction, team news, lineups

Sports Mole previews Thursday's Europa Conference League clash between Feyenoord and Partizan, including predictions, team news and possible lineups.

After a 5-2 away win last week, Feyenoord will look to confirm their place in the final eight of the Europa Conference League when they play host to Partizan on Thursday.

The Dutch outfit put in a dominant display in Serbia and will now aim to complete the job on home turf.

Match preview

After dominating their group, courtesy of four victories and two draws, Feyenoord earned automatic progression to the Europa Conference League round of 16, and Serbian outfit Partizan awaited.

They made the tough trip for the first leg last week, and, despite falling behind on two occasions, they equalised each time through Jens Toornstra and Cyriel Dessers.

Lutsharel Geertruida then got on the scoresheet alongside Luis Sinisterra before Toornstra hit his second to give Arne Slot's side a healthy three-goal advantage at the halfway stage of the tie.

They built on that with a league victory at the weekend, overturning a deficit to defeat PEC Zwolle 2-1 away from home thanks to goals from Sinisterra and Dessers after the hour mark, strengthening their position in the top three of the Eredivisie table as a result.

Now with home advantage and a three-goal lead, De club aan de Maas will look to finish the job and book their place in the quarter-finals.

Partizan, meanwhile, make the trip looking to defy all odds and overturn the deficit.

After finishing second in their group, the Serbian giants had to battle through a playoff tie to reach this stage, and, despite being underdogs against Sparta Prague, they progressed thanks to 1-0 and 2-1 wins.

That saw them meet Feyenoord, and, despite welcoming the Dutch outfit to their hostile home in the first leg, they were swept aside after Bibras Natcho and Nemanja Jovic looked to have put them in the ascendancy either side of half time.

Crno-beli were unable to bounce back at the weekend, as they were held to a goalless draw at home to Napredak in the Serbian SuperLiga, dropping off top spot as a result.

Now with almost nothing to lose, given their predicament in this tie, Aleksandar Stanojevic's men should come out firing in Rotterdam in their bid to come back against the odds.

Team News

Feyenoord's Jens Toornstra celebrates scoring their first goal on March 10, 2022© Reuters

After last week's dominant showing, Feyenoord are unlikely to make too many changes, with Denzel Hall set to remain the only absentee.

Luis Sinisterra and Reiss Nelson should again flank forward Cyriel Dessers, who has netted five goals in seven Conference League appearances this term.

Further back, Gernot Trauner and Marcos Senesi will partner up at the heart of a back four with Jens Toornstra offering attacking threat from the midfield after his brace in the away leg.

The visitors are without centre-back Igor Vujacic, who will serve a suspension after being shown his third yellow card of the tournament last week.

However, key attacker Ricardo Gomes will return to contention after he was banned for that game, and the Cape Verde international should come straight back into the front line, having contributed 21 goals and eight assists in 26 league appearances this term as well as hitting a brace in the second leg of their triumph over Sparta Prague.

In what is bound to be a more attacking setup, he should join forward Marko Milovanovic with Lazar Markovic, Bibras Natcho and Queensy Menig supporting the front line.

Feyenoord possible starting lineup:
Bijlow; Geertruida, Trauner, Senesi, Malacia; Toornstra, Aursnes, Kokcu; Nelson, Dessers, Sinisterra

Partizan possible starting lineup:
Popovic; Zivkovic, Sanicanin, Miletic, Urosevic; Zdjelar; Markovic, Natcho, Menig; Milovanovic, Gomes

We say: Feyenoord 3-1 Partizan (Feyenoord win 8-3 on aggregate)

Now only needing to see out a win, Feyenoord may not come out as positively as they did for the first leg, but we still see them picking up another victory on the night and progressing in dominant fashion.

The visitors should come out all guns blazing, and, while they may get on the scoresheet, they could leave themselves open on the break.
