Leicester City clinch narrow win over Rotherham United

Second-half goals from Riyad Mahrez and David Nugent hand Leicester City a 2-1 win over Rotherham United in a pre-season friendly at the New York Stadium.

Leicester City have survived a late fightback from Rotherham United to secure a 2-1 win in a pre-season friendly at the New York Stadium.

The Premier League side had the majority of the early possession with Ryan Watson and Riyad Mahrez both trying to get shots away inside the opening 15 minutes, while chances remained scarce for the remainder of the first half.

Rotherham came close to opening the scoring at the start of the second half as Jordan Bowery found himself one-one-one with Mark Schwarzer, but could only curl his finish wide.

The Foxes soon started to dominate with David Nugent, Jeffrey Schlupp and Mahrez all running at the home side's goal, but the Rotherham defence held firm.

The visitors did break the deadlock before the hour mark though as Mahrez picked up the ball just outside the box, curling it into the top corner.

Claudio Ranieri's men soon doubled their lead as Schlupp played the ball in for Nugent, leaving his teammate to drive the ball past the Rotherham keeper.

The Millers gave themselves hope of salvaging something from the match inside the final 10 minutes as Grant Ward thumped a swerving shot in from 20 yards out, cutting Leicester's lead in half.

Schlupp tried to put the win beyond doubt for Leicester in the final minutes, setting up Mahrez for another strike, only to see the effort saved by Kelle Roos, before firing wide himself moments later.

Nugent could have added a third for the top-flight side with just moments remaining, but Roos pulled off a save at full stretch to keep the deficit to one goal.
