Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana has insisted that he was not fearful a penalty could be awarded against him in the latter stages of Monday's Premier League clash with Wolverhampton Wanderers.

The Red Devils were closing in on three points at Old Trafford when there was a late incident inside the home team's penalty box, with Onana colliding with towering forward Sasa Kalajdzic.

There were strong calls from the away team for a penalty, while their head coach Gary O'Neil was booked for his protests, with the VAR officials deciding that a clear error had not been made by the referee.

As a result, Man United secured a vital win in their league opener courtesy of a second-half header from Raphael Varane, who converted a cross from Aaron Wan-Bissaka.

Onana has said that he was not worried when it appeared that the referee could be sent across to the pitchside monitor to review the incident.

"No, I don't worry," said the summer arrival from Inter Milan when speaking to MUTV after the contest. "I thought because at the end of the day, I [have] made my decision and you earn the right to make the right choice.

"Sometimes yes, sometimes not. At the end of the day, you learn from mistakes. I trust the referees. What they are doing is not easy, especially now with the VAR.

"So I was calm. I knew it wasn't [a penalty]. It was just a contact in there. So I'm calm and, for me, I'm very happy with this victory.''

Man United found it difficult to get going for long stages of the contest and watched Wolves miss a number of chances both before and after they managed to find the back of the net through Varane.

"The team showed character in the end," Onana added. "We showed we are a good club, we have good players and we are used to performing on this platform.

"So we will show a lot of character because it is not easy. Like I said, we play games we faced a very good opponent and, here, I'm happy. I'm happy with the victory and I'm happy for the clean sheet."

Onana made his official debut for Man United in the clash with Wolves alongside Mason Mount, who was substituted in the second half of the clash at Old Trafford.

However, there was no appearance for Harry Maguire, with the England centre-back remaining an unused substitute despite Lisandro Martinez picking up a slight injury at the break.

Man United will now be bidding to make it two wins from their opening two matches of the new Premier League campaign when they head to Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday evening.
