Preview: Oldham Athletic vs. Solihull Moors - prediction, team news, lineups

Sports Mole previews Saturday's National League clash between Oldham Athletic and Solihull Moors, including predictions, team news and possible lineups.

Oldham Athletic will be seeking to make it back-to-back home wins for the first time this season when they host Solihull Moors at Boundary Park on Saturday.

The visitors are looking to make it five straight wins in the National League, which has given them an outside chance to finish in the playoff places.

Match preview

Mike Fondop's late header secured a point for Oldham as they shared the spoils with Dagenham & Redbridge at Victoria Road last weekend.

Dagenham broke the deadlock in the 37th minute when Jay Bird played a neat combination of passes with Mohammed Sagaf before turning and finishing into the bottom corner, before David Unsworth's side found an equaliser with six minutes to go when John Rooney's corner found the head of Fondop, who nodded in from close range.

The Latics currently lie in 15th place in the standings with 45 points and do not appear in any real dangers of being dragged into a relegation battle, as they are currently 11 points clear of 21st-placed Gateshead.

When these two sides last met, Oldham were sat in the relegation zone, but the Latics' home form has seen them propel up the table.

Based on home form, Unsworth's men would be 13th in the standings, having claimed 30 points from 18 games at Boundary Park, and their last home game saw them claim all three points against Woking, courtesy of a dramatic 93rd-minute winner from Nathan Sheron.

As for Solihull, two second-half goals from Mark Beck and Josh Kelly helped the Moors beat in-form Boreham Wood and claim a fourth straight win.

The Wood were yet to lose in 2023 before their trip to the ARMCO Arena, but that all changed after a dominant performance from Neal Ardley's men, and that victory leaves Solihull seven points off the playoff places in ninth.

March has certainly been a month to remember for Solihull up until this point, winning all four of their National League fixtures, starting with a 2-0 victory over Maidstone United on March 4.

The Moors then followed-up that triumph with an enthralling 3-2 win over Torquay United before victories over Scunthorpe and Boreham Wood rounded off a quartet of home successes.

Ardley's side have been decent travellers this season, amassing 22 points from 18 matches, although their last away victory came on February 7 against York City.

Team News

Bassala Sambou made his Oldham debut against Dagenham & Redbridge last time out, but Mike Fondop could replace him in the starting XI after scoring the equaliser from the bench against the Daggers.

Devarn Green had to be substituted in the draw with Dagenham, so Ben Tollitt looks set to take his place this weekend.

As for the visitors, Neal Ardley named an unchanged side against Boreham Wood from the one that beat Scunthorpe United, so Solihull could be unchanged once again this Saturday.

That means the Moors could begin in a three-at-the-back formation, with Mark Beck and Josh Kelly leading the line in a front two. However, Jamey Osborne will remain absent due to suspension after receiving his marching orders against Torquay United on March 7.

Oldham Athletic possible starting lineup:
Hudson; Sheron, Hogan, Sutton, Kitching; Tollitt, Chapman, Rooney, Burgess; Fondop, Nuttall

Solihull Moors possible starting lineup:
Boot; Clarke, Howe, Gudger; Roberts, Whelan, Sbarra, Maycock, Donawa; Kelly, Beck

We say: Oldham Athletic 1-2 Solihull Moors

Solihull are in much better form than their opponents coming into this game, so we have sided with the away team for this one.

Oldham are enjoying a decent spell on their own patch, but we think the visitors will have too much firepower for the Latics.
