Masters champion Adam Scott is 'one of nine' players considering legal action against the decision to ban anchored putters from the game of golf.

Masters champion Adam Scott is one of nine players who are considering legal action over golf's governing bodies' decision to ban anchored putters from 2016, Boston-based lawyer Harry L Manion has said.

The R&A and USGA confirmed on Tuesday that longer putters would be banned from January 1, 2016 under rule 14-1b.

South Africa's Tim Clark has said that he is among "a fair number" of players exploring their legal options, with Manion telling GolfDigest.com that he represents nine players, including Clark, Scott and Carl Pettersson.

Manion is also quoted as saying that he has read the governing bodies' explanation for the ban, adding: "I'm not persuaded by it. There's some good lawyering in there, but I don't think they've made the case, and I believe the court would see it that way, too."

While the European Tour supports the ban, the PGA Tour of America has said that it is against it.
