Gillingham go top after Doncaster Rovers win

Gillingham go top of the League One table after a 1-0 win over Doncaster Rovers.

Gillingham have gone top of the League One table after a 1-0 win over Doncaster Rovers this afternoon.

Gillingham dominated the early proceedings and Cody McDonald tried to fee on-loan Emmanuel Osadebe, but the Tottenham Hotspur midfielder couldn't quite reach the through ball.

Josh Wright had a chance on eight minutes when the ball fell to him on the edge of the box, but his powerful effort was well blocked as Gillingham continued to press for the opener.

Bradley Dack forced Thorsten Stuckmann into a smart save with an effort from the edge of the area, and it was the home side who were the better team in the opening half hour.

A clever ball from Richard Chaplow released Cedric Evina, but his blasted effort across goal just missed Curtis Main as the striker tried to convert on 22 minutes.

Gillingham continued to carve out the better openings in the second half and McDonald went close when he fired over when well placed less than five minutes after the restart.

Dack went down inside the area just after the hour mark under the challenge of Gary MacKenzie, but the official waved away his appeal.

Stuckmann was called into action shortly after to deny Wright, but the home side netted from the resulting corner after a goal-mouth scramble.

Jake Hessenthaler's effort initially appeared to have been blocked on the line before Osadede was also denied, but the linesman halted play and awarded a goal to the former on 65 minutes.

Stuckmann was alert to deny Gillingham as Gills pushed for a second, with the keeper pulling out a full-stretch save to thwart a goal-bound effort from Dack.
