Preview: Huddersfield Town vs. Wigan Athletic - prediction, team news, lineups

Sports Mole previews Tuesday's Championship clash between Huddersfield Town and Wigan Athletic, including predictions, team news and possible lineups.

Wigan Athletic will be bidding to make it successive wins in the Championship when they travel to an out-of-form Huddersfield Town side on Tuesday night.

The visitors recorded a 2-1 victory over Luton Town in the league last time out, while Huddersfield will enter the contest off the back of a 1-0 home defeat to Blackpool.

Huddersfield finished third in the Championship last season before beating Luton in the semi-finals of the playoffs, but they lost 1-0 to Nottingham Forest in the final, with the team now playing in their fourth straight season at this level of football.

The Terriers have struggled in the early stages of this season, picking up just four points from their seven Championship matches, which has left them in 23rd spot in the table.

Danny Schofield's side beat Stoke City 3-1 on August 13 but have only secured one point from their last four league fixtures, suffering defeats in their last two against Bristol City and Blackpool.

Huddersfield were due to travel to Queens Park Rangers in the league on Saturday, but the full fixture list in English football was postponed following the death of Queen Elizabeth II.

The West Yorkshire outfit have only been victorious in one of their last four Championship fixtures with Wigan and suffered a 2-0 defeat in the corresponding fixture during the 2019-20 campaign.

Wigan, meanwhile, finished top of League One last season to secure a return to this level, with the Latics back in the Championship for the first time since being relegated from the second tier in 2019-20.

Leam Richardson's side have made a relatively solid start to the campaign, picking up 10 points from seven matches, which has left them in 15th spot in the table.

Wigan, who were due to take on Blackburn Rovers on Saturday, have actually only lost once in the league this term, sharing the points in four of their seven matches thus far.

Richardson's team suffered a 5-1 home defeat to Burnley on August 27 but bounced back by holding West Bromwich Albion to a 1-1 draw before recording a 2-1 victory at Luton last time out.

Wigan's final two games ahead of the international break are against Huddersfield and Reading, and they could find themselves in the top half of the division with a couple of positive results.

Team News

Huddersfield will be missing David Kasumu, Tyreece Simpson, Matty Pearson and Luke Mbete for Tuesday's contest with Wigan.

There could be a debut in the middle of the home side's defence for Michal Helik, while Patrick Jones is pushing to be involved in the final third of the field.

The same front three from the defeat to Blackpool could again start, though, with Danny Ward having support from Sorba Thomas and Faustino Anjorin.

As for Wigan, Jordan Cousins and Gwion Edwards are out of the match through injury, while Rarmani Edmonds-Green is not able to take on his parent club.

The bulk of the XI that took to the field for the first whistle against Luton last time out are expected to continue here due to the nature of the performance and the result.

However, there could be an alteration in the final third of the field, with Thelo Aasgaard, who netted the late winner on September 3, pushing to replace Callum Lang.

Huddersfield Town possible starting lineup:
Nicholls; Turton, Helik, Nakayama; Jones, Rudoni, Russell, Ruffels; Thomas, Ward, Anjorin

Wigan Athletic possible starting lineup:
Amos; Kerr, Whatmough, Tilt; Nyambe, Power, Naylor, McClean; Aasgaard, Magennis, Keane

We say: Huddersfield Town 1-1 Wigan Athletic

Wigan have shared the spoils in four of their seven Championship matches this season, and we can see another stalemate here. Huddersfield are better than what they have shown this term, and a tight contest on Tuesday evening could end with the points being shared.
