Lyon suffer Champions League exit

Lyon drop out of the Champions League after a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Gent leaves them with no chance of progressing from Group H.

Lyon have been dumped out of this season's Champions League after slipping to a 2-1 defeat against Gent at the Stade de Gerland this evening.

The Ligue 1 club made a bright start to the game and they took the lead in the seventh minute when Jordan Ferri slotted in at the near post after being played through by Rachid Ghezzal.

Kenny Saief soon had a header tipped over by the keeper as the visitors threatened, before Alexandre Lacazette came close with a low strike that was turned behind by Matz Sels.

In the 32nd minute the visitors managed to draw level as Danijel Milicevic curled a free kick into the corner that left goalkeeper Anthony Lopes helpless.

Mathieu Valbuena almost came up with a quick response, but his effort missed the target, before Lopes saved from Brecht Dejaegere's header.

After the break, Valbuena forced Sels into a save from his low volley, before the keeper was called upon again to stop Ghezzal's attempt.

Lyon continued to pose a threat and Ghezzal soon had another chance with a powerful shot was parried at the near post by Sels.

With the game heading towards a draw, Gent stole the win in the fifth minute of stoppage time as Kalifa Coulibaly headed in from a corner to leave his side's fate of qualifying for the knockout stages in their own hands, while condemning Lyon to an early exit from Europe.
