Preview: West Bromwich Albion vs. Stoke City - prediction, team news, lineups

Sports Mole previews Saturday's Championship clash between West Bromwich Albion and Stoke City, including predictions, team news and possible lineups.

West Bromwich Albion head into their showdown with Stoke City looking to eat further into a seven-point deficit to the Championship playoff spots.

At a time when the Baggies still have faint hopes of an immediate return to the Premier League, Stoke are down in 15th position in the standings after a disappointing defeat at Reading earlier this week.

Match preview

Having accumulated just 12 points from 11 matches since his arrival, West Brom cannot claim to have significantly improved under Steve Bruce.

Nevertheless, home wins over Fulham and Bournemouth, the top two teams in the division, have highlighted that the Baggies squad is good enough for this level and simply under-performed at the turn of the year.

With seven points still the deficit to the playoffs, West Brom are no more than outsiders to secure a place in next season's top flight, but another maximum return at the weekend would keep the clubs above them looking over their shoulder.

Andy Carroll returned to the starting lineup in midweek to net his second strike in 11 appearances, although the forward showed why his presence in the team is as important as his goals.

After a previous poor run of form in the final third, West Brom have now netted nine times in six games, and a continued improvement in that area of the pitch will at least keep them competitive during the run-in.

Michael O'Neill would have hoped for the same for his Stoke side after much-needed back-to-back wins over Millwall and Sheffield United respectively.

However, losing 2-1 at Reading in midweek has almost certainly ended any lingering hopes of promotion, and potentially leaving O'Neill closer to the Potters exit door.

Given the squad at his disposal, there is no doubt that the former Northern Ireland boss has produced results well below expectations, and he has been left to try to collect a minimum of eight points from six games to at least reach the 60-point mark.

The Staffordshire outfit make the short trip to The Hawthorns having failed to win any of their last eight away fixtures in the league, collecting just four points during that period.

Team News

Callum Robinson celebrates scoring for West Bromwich Albion against Bournemouth in the Championship on August 6, 2021© Reuters

Barring any injury issues, Bruce could stick with the same West Brom XI which started the game against Bournemouth.

However, Callum Robinson is in contention for a recall due to his greater goal threat, with Grady Diangana's place seemingly at risk.

Despite having an extra day of rest, more changes are expected to be made to Stoke's team after their latest setback at Reading.

After Jordan Thompson's injury in midweek, Romaine Sawyers is in line for a recall after scoring as a substitute, although Mario Vrancic is an alternative.

Tyrese Campbell and Steven Fletcher are also in contention, with D'Margio Wright-Phillips and Josh Maja possibly dropping down to the bench.

West Bromwich Albion possible starting lineup:
Johnstone; Ajayi, Bartley, Clarke; Furlong, Gardner-Hickman, Livermore, Mowatt, Townsend; Carroll, Diangana

Stoke City possible starting lineup:
Bonham; Wilmot, Jagielka, Harwood-Bellis, Tymon; Allen, Baker; Brown, Sawyers, Campbell; Fletcher

We say: West Bromwich Albion 2-1 Stoke City

While West Brom are currently in the habit of raising their game against the better teams, that has not been the case against the rest of the division. That said, Stoke have been disappointing on their travels for some time, and it would come as a surprise if the Baggies do not edge this contest.
