Wigan Warriors defeat Wakefield Trinity Wildcats in Super League thriller

Wigan Warriors defeat Wakefield Trinity Wildcats 40-22 in the Super League to move second in the Super League table.

Wigan Warriors have condemned Wakefield Trinity Wildcats to their ninth successive Super League defeat with a 40-22 victory.

Craig Hall opened the scoring after just 30 seconds, finding a gap in the Wigan defence before crossing the line.

Dominic Crosby then levelled the scores seven minutes later, powering through a trio of Wakefield defenders to score his first try in two years.

Matty Smith then gave Wigan the lead, rounding Hall with ease before touching down, and Joe Burgess added Wigan's third try in the 21st minute.

Wakefield captain Danny Kirmond pulled a try back five minutes later, after good work from Tim Smith drew two defenders and Kirmond crossed the line.

Dom Manfredi scored his 10th try of the season for Wigan just before half time, racing over the line after good play from Matty Smith and Ryan Hampshire.

Pita Godinet pulled another one back just before half time, diving over the line after a dummy move fooled three defenders.

Burgess scored his second Wigan try of the night just after the restart in the corner, but Chris Riley replied for Wakefield three minutes later.

The hat-trick was complete for Burgess in the 64th minute, crossing in the corner after George Williams's pass deceived the Wakefield defence.

The result sees Wigan leapfrog St Helens into second in the Super League table.
