Garry Monk wants Federico Fernandez red card rescinded

Garry Monk wants Swansea defender Federico Fernandez to have his red card rescinded after being sent off in the 2-1 League Cup defeat at Liverpool.

Swansea City manager Garry Monk is hopeful that Federico Fernandez's red card from tonight's 2-1 Capital One Cup defeat at Liverpool will be rescinded.

The Argentine was given his marching orders by referee Keith Stroud for a stoppage-time challenge on Philippe Coutinho, with Dejan Lovren netting a late winner minutes later.

Monk has now urged Stroud to "see some sense" and review the incident before submitting his match report.

He told Sky Sports News: "The sending-off, which clearly isn't a sending-off at all.... hopefully the referee will see some sense and the authorities will rescind that red card, because it wasn't a red card at all.

"It's an honest challenge. If anything, Coutinho's feet were higher than ours and actually went in over the top of our player.

"I don't quite see how the referee saw that, but hopefully he sees sense and rescinds it."

The Swans had at one point looked on course for a quarter-final spot after Marvin Emnes fired the visitors into a 65th-minute lead.

However, Mario Balotelli came off the bench to poke home an equaliser four minutes from the end, before Lovren struck late to punish 10-man Swansea.
