Manchester City have booked their spot in the semi-finals of the Champions League courtesy of a 4-1 aggregate success over Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich.

The Citizens had a huge advantage to bring into the second leg of Wednesday's quarter-final at Allianz Arena following a 3-0 victory in the opening match in Manchester last week.

Pep Guardiola's side were almost winners in Munich, with Erling Braut Haaland making up for an earlier penalty miss by netting in the 57th minute of the contest, but Joshua Kimmich converted a late spot kick to level the scores on the night.

Man City will take on the reigning champions Real Madrid in the semi-finals of the competition, while the other last-four clash will be a Milan derby between AC Milan and Inter Milan.

Bayern, as expected, were on the front foot in the early exchanges, with Kingsley Coman and Leroy Sane both looking dangerous in the wide positions.

Coman almost picked out the returning Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting with a cross in the eighth minute, but there was just too much power on the delivery from the France international.

Bayern's first serious chance of the night came in the 17th minute when Sane broke into the box before looking to pick out the bottom corner, but the German's effort was just wide of the far post, with Man City, who had made a slow start, given a warning at Allianz Arena.

There was an incredible moment in the 18th minute when Dayot Upamecano was shown a red card for a last-man challenge on Haaland, but the offside flag was then raised, much to the relief of the Frenchman, who had clipped the Man City forward.

Emotions were running high, with Bayern head coach Thomas Tuchel picking up a booking in the aftermath, and Ederson then made a brilliant save to keep out a Sane free kick in the 21st minute, before Leon Goretzka fired over the crossbar three minutes later.

The visitors were awarded a penalty in the 36th minute, with Upamecano being penalised for a handball on a shot from Ilkay Gundogan; Haaland stepped up, but he blazed his effort over the crossbar, which brought a huge cheer from the Bayern supporters.

Kimmich fired over the crossbar from a dangerous area in the period that followed, before Ederson kept out a powerful drive from Coman, who created more havoc with a brilliant turn in the latter stages of the half, but Man City survived attempts from Jamal Musiala and Sane in quick succession.

Haaland had an opportunity to make up for his penalty miss in the 55th minute when he broke into the Bayern box, but the striker's effort was comfortably kept out by Yann Sommer.

Ederson then made a smart save to deny Coman before Man City went down the other end and scored, with Kevin De Bruyne feeding Haaland, who made the most of a slip from Upamecano before smashing the ball past Sommer to make it 4-0 to the English champions on aggregate.

Choupo-Moting saw a low strike kept out by Ederson in the 67th minute, before Mathys Tel found the back of the net in the 75th minute, only for the offside flag to cut short the cheers inside the stadium.

Bayern were awarded a penalty of their own in the 82nd minute when Manuel Akanji was penalised for a handball on a cross from Mane, with the referee giving the decision after a look at the monitor.

Kimmich stepped up for the home side to score, firing straight down the middle, with the home team given a glimmer of hope.

Tel was lively and fired over the crossbar with a powerful attempt in the 85th minute, before Tuchel was sent off after picking up a second yellow card, with the German showing his frustration at the officials.

Mane fired just wide in the latter stages, with Bayern looking for another, but it finished 1-1 on the night, with the English champions progressing to the semi-finals courtesy of a 4-1 aggregate success.

Bayern's focus will now be solely on the Bundesliga, with Tuchel's side only sitting two points clear of second-placed Borussia Dortmund at the top of the table.

Man City, meanwhile, will take on Sheffield United in the semi-finals of the FA Cup on Saturday before welcoming Premier League leaders Arsenal for a gigantic contest next week.
