Preview: Dallas vs. Austin FC - prediction, team news, lineups

Sports Mole previews Sunday's Major League Soccer clash between Dallas and Austin FC, including predictions, team news and possible lineups.

Dallas will be looking to get back to winning ways in the MLS when they host Austin FC at Toyota Stadium on Sunday.

The Texans have endured a poor start to the season, winning just twice in ten matches so far and sitting just one place above the relegation zone.

Match preview

Dallas were in action in midweek, defeating Memphis 901 1-0 in the U.S. Open Cup and will now face Tampa Bay Rowdies in the next round.

Back in the MLS, the Toros suffered a seven-game winless run before their victory over Houston Dynamo. However, they could not build on that momentum, losing 3-1 to Toronto in their last league outing.

Nico Estevez's side have a meagre eight points after ten MLS games this season - their worst start to a domestic campaign since 2021 (seven points).

Dallas return home on Saturday against Austin, a team they have a strong record against. They have beaten them six times, drawn twice and lost just three times in eleven meetings.

Both of their MLS wins this season have come at home and they are unbeaten in their last three home games across all competitions. The Toros also won their last home game against Austin and have a good record at Toyota Stadium, winning four out of five against them there.

Austin's defensive solidity has been key to their recent improvement. Josh Wolff's side went winless in their first five regular-season matches but have only lost one of their last six and have also kept clean sheets in their last three games.

However, while they are on an upward curve, their struggles away from home, particularly scoring goals, are well documented.

So far in 2024, the Verde and Black have only scored in one of their away fixtures, defeating Houston Dynamo 1-0. They have not won an MLS game outside of Texas since July 2023 (4-1 win over Minnesota United).

Austin won their last match against Dallas in March this year, but they are still searching for their first-ever victory at Toyota Stadium, having only managed a draw in five attempts.

Team News

FC Dallas midfielder Sebastian Lletget (8) celebrates with teammates after scoring a goal on March 17, 2024© Reuters

Dallas could be missing a long list of players, including Sebastian Lletget, who is doubtful with a knock, and Paxton Pomykal, who is out for the season after undergoing surgery on his left knee.

Amet Korca is out with a groin issue, Geovane Jesus is still recovering from a knee problem and Alan Velasco is on the mend after previously tearing his ACL and MCL.

Petar Musa leads the way for Dallas on the scorer's chart with three goals in nine appearances and he should start in attack for the Toros.

Daniel Pereira is out for Austin due to an unspecified reason, while there are no other reports of any injury or suspension.

Diego Rubio is the leading scorer for the Verde and Black with three goals and should lead the line once again on Saturday.

Dallas possible starting lineup:
Paes; Ibeagha, Tafari, Junqua; Twumasi, Fraser, Delgado, Farfan; Arriola, Kamungo; Musa

Austin FC possible starting lineup:
Stuver; Gallagher, Cascante, Hines-Ike, Biro; Ring, Valencia; Obrian, Driussi, Rigoni; Rubio

We say: Dallas 1-1 Austin FC

Dallas have been poor this year but both seven of their eight points have come on home soil. The hosts also have an ongoing unbeaten run at home against the visitors, who have struggled on the road as well. We expect a draw here as the home side are not in a great moment.
